Garlic fly (Suillia lurida or Suillia univittata). Very dangerous pest of winter garlic. Also affects onions, leeks and other alliaceous, including weeds of this family.
Garlic fertilized adult fly is brown-red winter remains of plants, lumps of earth, under the bark of trees. Garlic overfly areas or fields in March and in early April, especially in early spring when the temperature rises to +10°C and the garlic has time to form the 1-2 leaf and lays each plant one egg.
Garlic fly as pest was first detected in Czechoslovakia in 1962. The spread of this pest is in the Central and Eastern Europe. In some areas yield losses from the cause of the infection garlic fly reach 10%.
Of the eggs, whitish larvae of approximately 12 mm in length are regenerated, which bite into the leaf and eat out its interior, making the corridor down. The damaged leaf quickly dies off, twisting spirally.
New generations of adult garlic flies appear in May and June. The pest has one generation per year, therefore only winter garlic is damaged, since spring spring (at the time of laying the egg fly) does not allow green shoots.

The fight against garlic fly
For small producers, the best way of dealing with garlic a fly is used as a physical protection white non-woven material that will prevent the garlic to the fly to carry out oviposition at the base of the shoots of garlic.
