Zoning of varieties of garlic in Ukraine

The peculiarity of growing garlic is that it propagates in a vegetative manner. This means the formation of a new plant from the part of the parent. As a planting material, a chisel, a single-rod or air bulb is used. All this is not a seed. Real seeds of the inflorescence of garlic form, but in the process of plant growth, their development is suppressed by air bulbs.

This means that garlic with difficulty and very long time adapts to changes in growth conditions. That is, it has a pronounced distribution zoning.

In the industrial cultivation of garlic, there were cases when imported varieties of garlic (Spanish) imported into Ukraine, which, due to changes in the growing area, did not sprout.

Garlic in the Register of Plant Varieties of Ukraine

It should also be noted that there is a State Register of Plant Varieties suitable for distribution in Ukraine, which is approved for each year. Register for 2016, you can see here

At the time of writing, 9 varieties of garlic are listed in the Register:

  1. Prometheus

  7. Merefiansky white

  9. The Witch Doctor

The presence of a variety of garlic in the register means that it is these varieties that are allowed for sale as a planting stock. There are no restrictions on trade in commodity garlic and cultivation for other varieties.

Some garlic varieties were previously entered in the register and dropped out, probably due to the termination of their support by the owner of the variety but this did not make them worse and continue to be grown both by farmers and households.

Variety of garlic Sophia

It was created by the Uman Agricultural Institute.

Purple variety

It is entered in the Register of plant varieties of Ukraine in 1990

Winter garlic, arrowing. The middle-ripeness.

Vegetation period is 105-110 days.

Bulb broad elliptical shape with a slight upward lift. The bulbs are large, in the bulb they are 5-6 pieces, placed compactly.

Plant height without arrow 70 cm, with arrow – 110 cm.

Subjectively – sharpness on 8 on 10-ball.

Grade of garlic Prometheus

The Ukrainian variety of garlic Prometheus was created in the Uman Agricultural Academy.

Winter garlic, arrowing. The covering scales of the bulb are matte white. Consists of 5-6 bulbs.

It is entered in the Register of plant varieties of Ukraine in 1999

Variety of garlic Kharkov violet

Ukrainian variety of garlic Kharkov violet was created in the Institute of Vegetable Growing and Melon Farming UAAS. Winter garlic, arrowing. The medium-ripening vegetation period is 110-115 days.

Bulb is rounded-flattened, elongated upwards, of medium density, weighing 25-40 grams. Cover scales of light-violet color. The bulb consists of 4-6 bulbs. Leaflets are dark green, the wax is average.

The taste is very pungent. So far, 10 out of 10 of what I’ve tried.

Variety of garlic Duchesse

Established in the Institute of Vegetable and Melon Farming NAAN. The variety is early ripening, the period from the appearance of mass shoots to the full commercial ripeness of 85-100 days. When sowing with air bulbs – 60-80 days.

Leaves are light green with a length of 47-48 cm and a width of 2.2-2.5 cm. On one plant, as a rule, 8-10 leaves are formed. Bulbs have a rounded-flattened shape. They are covered with 4-5 dry scales of white color with purple stripes along the vessels. Bulb weight 50-60 gr. Bulb consists of 5-6 aligned, mostly large bulbs, covered with thick parchment light brown scales.

Variety of garlic Merefyan white

It was created in the Institute of Vegetable Growing and Melon Farming of UAAS. Winter garlic, arrowing. The middle ripening period is 105-110 days. The bulb is wide-elliptical with a slight upward lift, dense. The bulbs are large, in the bulb they are 5-6 pieces, placed compactly. Dry scales white, fairly thick, dense. Leaves are long, broad, semi-straight.

 

Variety of garlic Spas

Created in Lviv NAU. Winter garlic, arrowing. the height of the arrow is 95-105 cm, the inflorescence is multiflorous, the air bulbs are small. The bulb is round-oval in shape with a slight extension upward. Dry scales are grayish-red-violet, with thick dark purple veins and characteristic luster. A variety of universal purpose, acute, sufficiently resistant to medium-resistant to fusarium. The average yield is 45-55 c / ha. Well-dried healthy bulbs can be stored fresh at low plus temperatures in the beginning and middle of April.

A characteristic feature of Spas, unlike others, is the ability to adapt well enough to new growing conditions, especially in southern areas. In particular, in the Kherson city and Kirovograd  city strait test stations, its yield for four years was 65-67 centers per hectare, which exceeds the yield in the conditions of the Lviv region and indicates the possibility of a wide range of Spas. It is listed in the Register of Plant Varieties of Ukraine in 1999

 

 

 

Variety of garlic Leader

It was created in Lviv NAU. Winter garlic. Nondestructive, floral arrows and air bulbs do not form. Plants of medium height. The leaves are 37-39 cm long, of medium width. Bulb oval-rounded with a slight extension upward. External scales dirty-white with light veins, weight 32-35 g. The variety is medium-spicy, table, medium-resistant to nematode and fusarium. The average yield is 45-50 c / ha. Healthy, well-dried bulbs at low plus temperatures can be stored until February-early March. It is listed in the Register of Plant Varieties of Ukraine in 2000.

 

Variety of garlic Victory

It was created in the Institute of Vegetable Growing and Melon Farming of UAAS. Winter garlic. Staggulent, mid-ripening, vegetative period 110-115 days. Bulb is round-flat, dense, weighing 35-40 g. Cover scales of violet color. Bulb 5-6 bulbs. The taste is sharp. Leaves (7-8) are dark green with medium waxy coating. The flowering arrow is 1.6-2.0 m high. There are many air bulbs, they are small.

 

Variety of garlic Starobelsky local

Local variety of Lugansk region. Winter garlic, arrowing. The mid-ripening, vegetative period is 105-110 days. Bulb round with extension upwards, weight 26-40 g. Color of dry covering scales white. The bulbs are large, they are in a bulb 4-6 pcs. The pulp is creamy, dense, the taste is sharp. Leaves 7-10, dark green with medium waxy coating. The flowering arrow is 130-140 cm high, the inflorescence is large. The air bulbs are small, in the inflorescence of their 180-260. It was entered in the register of plant varieties of Ukraine in 1964.

 

Grade of garlic Troyka

Created by Bioaliance LLC. Winter garlic, arrowing. Vegetation period is 90-110 days. The bulb is medium-sized, widely elliptical. The color of dry scales is reddish white. Bulbs in the bulb 9-12 pieces. It is entered in the Register of plant varieties of Ukraine in 2006.

 

Variety of garlic Ukrainian White Gulyaypole

Local variety of Gulyaypol district of Zaporozhye region. Spring garlic. It’s not furious. Mid-ripening, the period from mass shoots to harvest is 100-120 days.

Bulb is dense, irregularly shaped, covered with scales of silvery-white color, multi-bulb, weighing 20-23 g. Pulp is light creamy, brittle, tender, pleasant taste with a distinctive garlic odor. Well-dried bulbs are stored until a new crop.

Leaves are green with a bluish wax coating, rarely placed on an unidentified stalk. On a plant 8-10 basic and up to three axillary leaves, reaches a height of 25-30 cm. It is listed in the register of plant varieties of Ukraine in 1983.

 

 

Variety of garlic Odessa 13

Created at the Odessa State Agricultural Experimental Station. Spring garlic. It’s not furious. The middle-ripeness. Bulb is round-conical in shape, segmented, weighing 18-26 g. With 8-9 different in weight and shape of bulbs. The taste of the pulp is medium-sharp. The bulb is good and transportable. The leaves are dark green with a blue bloom, on the plant they are 8-9. The false stem is green, at the base pigmented, 28-30 cm in height. In the past it was zoned in almost all soil and climatic zones of Ukraine.

 

 

Variety of garlic Saksky

It was created in the Simferopol vegetable-melon plant. Spring garlic. It’s not furious. From the appearance of mass shoots to collection takes 90-115 days. Bulb is rounded-flattened, with 11-13 bulbs mass of 30-37 g, covered with dry scales of dirty white color. The taste of the pulp is sharp, but not burning, pleasant.

Leaves are green with a wax coating, on one plant there are 8-9. False stem short, 10-15 cm high. Stored well. It is listed in the Register of Plant Varieties of Ukraine in 1961.

Variety of garlic Lydia

Created in Lviv NAU. Early ripening (mid-June). To the best of acute taste. Easy to clean. An average of 8 bulbs.

Collection of garlic varieties in Ukraine

The largest collection of the gene pool of ecological forms of garlic in Ukraine was collected by the Lviv National Agrarian University. From year to year, his experts plant all the garlic varieties they have collected to preserve the collection, in which there are about 380 genotypes of garlic.

By order of the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine the collection is recognized as a scientific object, which is a national treasure.
