Seeds of garlic are some generalized concept that does not correctly reflect the difference of seed. For reproduction of winter garlic are used bulbils, garlic rounds  and clove.

Let’s consider in detail features of each variant of planting garlic.

In may/June winter garlic forms a flower arrow at the end of which, instead of inflorescences develop aerial bulbils. Selected, sorted, and dried in the fall they are planted in the field. The following year, from bulbils formed garlic rounds, weighing 0.5-5 g.

And only from this sets we will get next year’s harvest

Herewith, seed material is completely renewed, are genetically healthier.

The undeniable advantage is the price and it is possible to quickly multiply.

Of the shortcomings – the waiting period of result (2 years), and the complexity of the process for the collection of garlic rounds

Garlic rounds of diseases and pests, better root and overwinter, the yield you get next year, bulbils are always larger, and there is no need to separation.

Of the minuses – the price is much higher cloves

The yield of the obtained garlic rounds higher than that of clove with the same mass

Separated cloves of garlic planted for the winter, the next year will yield a full crop.

BUT! Grown in this way garlic, due to its biological characteristics, in 3-4 years can degenerate, lose genetic potential. The yield sharply declines, the number of cloves increases or decreases, the size and weight decrease, the growth force decreases, its taste qualities deteriorate, diseases and pests are transmitted.

It is important that the bulb was the first reproduction, without diseases and pests

Signs of degeneracy:

  • the cloves in the head are very different in size
  • the cloves split into each other
  • the cloves have a double top

Preparing for planting garlic

Bulbils Garlic rounds   Cloves
1. Separation of bulbils into cloves
1. Sort by diameter 1. Sort by diameter 2. Sort by diameter
  • large – 6-8mm
  • medium – 4-5 mm
  • small – 3-4 mm
  • large – 14 mm
  • medium – 10-14 mm
  • small – less than 10 mm
  • large -> 6gr (30 mm)
  • medium – 3-6gr (25mm)
  • small 2-3 gr (it is possible to waste)
Per hectare is used about 1500 kg of heads, that is 1200-1300 kg cloves (the exact calculation depends on the planting plans and weight cloves).
3. Etching

To destroy the pathogens before planting, the clove are etched with fungicides: a 3% solution of benzalate, an exposure of 3-4 minutes, a 3% solution of foundation, an exposure of 1-2 minutes. When etched into the working solution add a preparation containing trace elements (Rexolin, Reakom, Aquarin mix and others). For destruction in seed garlic, the nematodes carry out gasification with sulfur dioxide (100 g of sulfur per 1 m3 of volume) in hermetic containers.

  1. (4.) Planting

Each of the selected groups is planted separately

A large garlic bulbils will immediately give a monotone from which the commodity garlic will grow and small bulbils in the first year will grow small garlic rounds  from which in the second year large garlic rounds  will grow and already from them grows commodity garlic
